Double Desire

“When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” (Luke 22:14-15)

In a recent Bible study we read about Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, as we discussed it, one of the members was greatly impressed that Jesus “eagerly desired” to eat this meal with his disciples. With a little deeper study I found that the original language was very strong. “With desire I have desired,” Jesus said. Jesus longed to have this meal with His men.

Think about that. Facing death on a Roman cross and all the suffering that entailed, yet Jesus had a double desire to be with his disciples. There are probably several reasons for this strong desire. But notice that Jesus’ focus was not on Himself. Jesus was all about His relationship with His men!

It is very natural for us to be self-focused. But following Jesus often goes against our natural responses. “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4). That is exactly the way Jesus lived. And it is the way we can live when we follow Him. Living with deep concern for others changes our goals, our values, our relationships and our desires.

Question: Is my focus self-centered or other-oriented?

Challenge: My desires say a lot about who I am and what I choose to do.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Your love totally blows us away. Help us love others like You love.
