In baseball life, we find ourselves driving many miles with the kids, boxes, pets etc. When our kids were little I liked to drive at night. I would plan my drive with my AAA Atlas, write it down on paper and tape it to the dashboard. (These were the days without GPS or Mapquest.)
Throughout the night I would find myself on roads I had never been on and the lighting would be very scarce. At these times I had to rely on the small amount of light my headlights provided of road ahead. Only seeing a few hundred feet ahead left a lot that I couldn’t see, and I couldn’t plan for what might be around the next corner.
I find myself many times in the same situation in life. I want to know what tomorrow or next season brings. I'm a planner. I like to have things laid out, planned and prepared for. However, I have very little knowledge or control over what may be around the next corner or out of the view of the road that headlights may reveal.
I'm not always satisfied in my fleshly desires because I wanted the answer yesterday. I want to plan for what’s ahead. What I've had to learn is that peace comes when I surrender my cares and concerns to God and wait on Him for answers. They don’t always come as an announcement over a loud speaker, but often as a soft whisper. Sometimes that whisper is not completely the desires of my heart (my fleshly desires) but the will or way of the Lord. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord (Isaiah 55:8).
The wait is always worth it when we allow God to be in control and have His way. To surrender my desire of control to the Lord gives me great peace, knowing He is ready to bless me in ways I never even thought of.
