"Be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near." (James 5:8)
I love this verse. In this short verse we are reminded of so many things. First we are reminded to be patient. It's easy to lose focus and begin to emphasize the wrong things - to want to have instant gratification here on earth instead of doing what we know is right. Through patience, though, we learn perseverance – and perseverance leads to maturity. As we wait patiently for the Lord, we have the opportunity to see His hand in our life.
Standing firm is the second thing God expects of us. Standing firm can be hard, but speaks so loudly to others about who our God is. When we choose to serve Him instead of wavering in our decisions, we demonstrate His reality in our lives.
When we become more concerned with pleasing people than with pleasing God, not only do we lose our godly focus, but we lose our testimony as well. As women who would like to connect with those around us when we are away from what is familiar and far from home, it is tempting to change our speech or behavior in order to find acceptance. But as we focus on the Lord’s coming our heart is renewed.
Christ will return one of these days and - what do we want Him to find us doing? What do we want to have accomplished? Who do we want to take with us when we go to be with Him forever?
Prayer: Thank you, Father, for your Word that you’ve given us to keep us on track. Please help me to read it consistently and give me the strength to be patient.
