Feed My Lambs

So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep." (John 21:15-17)

Was Peter not listening? Was his attention elsewhere? Perhaps he was just tired. He had been working all night; he had just had a big breakfast and he may have been nodding off. But Jesus patiently persisted. “Do you love me?”

When I read this scripture I wondered…do I listen? What distractions do I allow to separate me from His voice? Do I work too hard or get involved in so many activities that I’m too tired to respond to Him?

And what does He call us to do? “Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep.” Out of hearts full of love for our Lord we minister to others. We care for those who need His touch. And we listen for His voice.

Is the Lord bringing to mind the names of any of His lambs that need a special touch today? Do what Jesus requested of Peter, feed them.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the people you put in my life over the years to “feed me.” Help me now to be sensitive to the needs that your lambs have, and to lovingly care for them, helping them find the spiritual food that they need to grow.

Suggested Reading: Psalm 119:33-34
