Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

When my son Eli started walking, I loved picking him up from the church nursery. His reaction was always the same - when he saw me over the half-door they use to corral all the little ones inside, he would let out a squeal and come walking toward me with his unstable steps, both arms lifted up, eyes never leaving my face. Not once did he make the trip from whatever toy happened to be of interest at the moment to the nursery door without tripping over multiple things on the way! The great part about it was his determination. He never gave up. He never just sat down and waited for me to come to him. As soon as his little diapered rear-end hit the carpet, he popped right back up again and continued on his trek to his mommy with his eyes locked on me and a cute grin on his face.

Each time I picked Eli up from the nursery I was reminded of that wonderfully encouraging verse in Hebrews that challenges us to “fix our eyes on Jesus.” In the same way Eli’s eyes never left me once he saw me standing in that doorway, I too want to fix my gaze on my Savior, and live a life that shows others where my focus is. I want to be determined to run this race of life well, yielding to the Holy Spirit to bring about change in me and pursuing Him above all other earthly things.

Along this journey there are bound to be things that get in our way and trip us up, causing us to fall either on our rears, or sometimes even flat on our faces! But how encouraging to read within this Hebrews 12 verse the promise that Jesus is not only the One who began the good work within us (the “author” of our faith), but he is also the One who will not leave our side until we arrive home to join Him and our Father (the “perfector” of our faith). No matter how many things we may trip over on the way, our Savior is there waiting as we stand back up and continue this journey called life.

My goal each off-season, besides getting as much time in with my husband as possible, is to re-focus and re-prioritize, asking myself what my eyes are fixed on at any particular moment. Am I fixing my eyes on Jesus, or am I too busy getting caught up with other things (even things that can be good, but not necessarily what I want to be “fixed” upon)?

What a difference it makes in our lives when we have our eyes set firmly on Jesus, living for Him and Him alone, and trusting in Him to complete that good work which He began in us!

Prayer: Lord, thank you that you alone are worthy for my eyes to be fixed upon! Help me to live each day with you at the forefront of my mind, asking myself how You would have me live. Thank you for your promise to continue Your work in me, and help make me more sensitive to the work You desire to do in me and through me!
