Are We Listening?

"I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths." (Proverbs 4:11)

Several years ago, my husband Braden and I came to big, life-changing decision. We decided to adopt a baby girl from China. The process was long but even at the point when it wouldn’t happen for a year or so, we had already been so blessed. We believed that God had spoken to our hearts about adoption, asking us to do this.

Some may wonder, “How does this happen? Surely God isn't really talking directly to you?” But God did speak to us. And He doesn't just speak to Braden and me; He speaks to all us. The hard part is being tuned into God to hear His voice. In the busyness of our life, some days it can be very distant. However, when we slow down, spend time with Him and ask Him for guidance, His voice can be loud and clear.

The key is whether or not we are listening.

I had always been open to it, but never really felt the desire to adopt. Then I started to feel like maybe we weren’t done with our family...yet I didn't really feel we were being led to try to get pregnant. As the Lord laid it on my heart, I started to contemplate adoption. Over the next weeks and months I prayed about it, and He caused a desire to grow in my heart. Well, this was such a life-changing step that I just prayed, "Lord, I need you to SHOW BRADEN AND ME if this is what you really want from us.”

At first my husband didn't believe I was really serious about bringing another child into our family. Up until then he hadn't even thought about it, so I knew God would have a lot of work to do in him. I wanted to be sure that step what was what God wanted for our family, and was willing to wait until He made his will for us clear.

Over the next months as we prayed together about this decision, we were blown away by God’s response. He confirmed in our hearts that the desire was from Him, and we anxiously awaited the new life He lovingly added to our home.

It’s true - God speaks. Are we listening?

Prayer: Father God, work in my heart to prepare me each day to hear your voice and to follow you unquestioningly. Thank you for caring enough to lead me.
