The Great Commission

"Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you." (Psalm 39:4-5)

I used to pray, "God, please don't lead my husband or me into some job that’s boring and mundane. Don't make us a miserable part of the rat race.” Then God led us into minor league baseball.

But even the baseball life can get mundane and exhausting. Going to the field every evening, sitting in the stands night after night, always traveling with no guarantee of a permanent home base and most of us on a salary that barely pays for rent.

To some that seems like an exciting way to live, but I have discovered that there is no "perfect" job or "perfect" life out there. I have, however, concluded that joy can be found in having the "perfect" perspective. But what is the right perspective on why we work?

Working and existing day after day seems less mundane when I place eternal significance on my daily activities. I want to approach my day saying, "God thank you for giving me one more day on this earth to show Your love and impact others with Your kingdom. Help me not waste a single moment you give me to share the Hope of Jesus. Help me treat my children like you would treat them. Help me be kind and considerate to the checkout person in the grocery line or the waitress in the restaurant. Help me think of others first at the gas station. Help me make eye contact with the tollbooth operator. Help me to gracious to the telemarketer."

There are two things that will live forever: the Word of God and the souls of men. My money will not cross over into eternal life, but I will live in heaven forever with the people I impacted for the glory of God. This perspective gives life meaning and value. I don't want to look back on my life and consider it a waste. I could possess everything this whole world offers and die with nothing if I fail to live out Jesus' Great Commission.

I want my life to Count for Jesus

For earthly fame will quickly fade

No need to add to earthly riches

I only seek eternal gain.

Prayer: Lord teach me to number my days and to consider how fleeting my life is. May I strive daily to live out Your Great Commission.
