A Good Good Father

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

Today I got to spend some time talking to a friend about a really hard season she is struggling through right now. We got to a point in the conversation where I asked her “You are angry at God because you don’t understand why this is in His plan, it’s okay to feel that way, but have you TOLD Him about it in prayer?” and her response was “No, I have been fake with God. I say what I’m supposed to say instead of just speaking my feelings to Him. I trust Him, but I’m angry, and I feel bad admitting that to Him.” Often when we are facing a difficult situation, it can be hard to simply tell God we aren’t happy. It feels so selfish and silly to complain when we are blessed in so many other ways.

But guess what? God WANTS us to tell Him about our struggles. He wants to meet us in the pit. He longs for an intimate relationship with us. He is our Father and calls us His children. By going to the cross, Jesus paid the immeasurable cost of our adoption in order to make us children of the living God. He is a GOOD father, not disinterested or too busy for us - He loves us and delights in us.

When we are genuine in sharing our hearts with Him, He responds by revealing Himself to us through His Word, the voice of the Holy Spirit, and many other ways - and in doing so, He brings us hope, peace, and comfort. We might not see God change our situation or answer our prayer in the way we hoped, but when we honestly and openly share our hearts desires with Him and seek His truths in the Bible, we will grow deeper in our understanding of His character and faithfulness to us, and in our relationship with Him.
