Lean In

"We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies." (Romans 8:22-23)

You know that sound when the home team hits an almost home run that gets caught at the fence? AHHHHHHHHH.

Or when it’s the bottom of the ninth, and the tying run gets thrown out at home plate? GAHHHHHHHH.

These heavy hearted sighs are similar to something we carry around with us all the time. Ever since the fall of man, there has been a groaning inside of all creation. A longing, a yearning to be made right with God. Inside of all of us is an ache we just can’t shake. And the reality is, we won’t be able to shake it until either Jesus returns, or we meet Him in heaven.

So what do we do? We basically have two choices. We can seek to deaden the groan, or we can lean into it. Many times in our life, we try to deaden or drown out that groaning feeling inside by chasing after things of this world that satisfy for a moment. Shopping, eating or drinking too much, getting caught up in distractions - these are just a few ways we can try to escape. But what if we went with the second option instead? What if we lean into the groan and let the Holy Spirit work in us? What if we lean in and hear what God would say through the hard times?

The more we lean in and let the Holy Spirit work in us, the more we develop an eternal perspective. The more we develop an eternal perspective, the more filled we are with the presence of Jesus. The more filled we are with the presence of Jesus, the more light that spills out onto those around us.

And suddenly the things of this world grow strangely dim…and we are on our toes reaching out for the Only One Who Can Satisfy.

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6

(Devotional inspired by Levi Lusko, author of Through the Eyes of a Lion)

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us lean into you through our groanings. May we always seek to live by the Spirit, not by the flesh. Amen.
