The Junk Drawer

“Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts away every branch of mine that does not produce fruit. But he trims clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it will produce even more fruit.” (John 15:1-2)

The dreaded junk drawer. We all have one. As a baseball family, we live in multiple “homes” each year, and the junk drawer concept has taken on a whole new meaning. The final step of every move-out day involves me dumping the contents of the drawer into a plastic grocery bag, tying the top, and tossing it into the car. Then when the season ends, I toss those bags into a closet or cabinet in our off-season home. And there they sit. I know they are there, but they aren’t really taking up that much space. They might have something of value in them, so I can’t just throw them away. But, sorting through them would take too much time. So, I let them pile up season after season.

Then, last off season I finally opened up all those junk drawer bags. Surprisingly, there was nearly nothing I actually needed in them. Things that were once valuable, were now worthless. But hidden amongst the old phone chargers and rolls of tape, were a few treasures. My husband’s very first baseball card, a hand-written note from a special friend, and even one of my daughter's ultrasound images. With all the junk bags disposed of, I could finally enjoy the true valuables that had been buried for so long.

Do you have some junk drawer bags in your life? God tells us in John 15 that God “cuts away every branch of mine that does not produce fruit.” Is our Great Gardener telling you it’s time to prune your dead branches, or sort through the junk? Maybe your confidence in your husband is mixed up in a bag of negative Twitter comments, internet articles, and fan opinions. Perhaps a talent is hidden in a bag of insecurities. Or the time you need to set aside for studying the Word is buried under past habits.

God tells us that he wants his blessings to be front and center. I encourage you to take time and sift through those junk drawer bags, recognize what is important, and let those treasures be on full display. Use the space in your life for God, plug into his Word, and allow him to fuel you!

Prayer: Father God, help us to sort through the bags of junk in our lives. Guide us in making decisions about what things are helping us thrive, and what items are burying our blessings and weighing us down. We praise you for being our faithful gardener and nourishing our branches so that we may bear much fruit. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
