"Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker."
When I was sixteen, I was almost killed in a severe car crash. The whole wreck is a blur and one of the first memories I had was in the ICU frantically asking my parents what had happened. Because one of the injuries I sustained was a punctured lung from cracked ribs, it was painful to talk and breathe on my own.
As I read this psalm of thanksgiving, I was reflecting on my wreck and the realization that every time my heart beats in my chest or my lungs fill with air, I can see the evidence of God’s love for me. Beat after beat, breath after breath, He is providing for me. He has not forgotten me.
Sadly, I am often like the Israelites who so easily forget and are quick to complain while every morning, manna is provided. Just as God provided manna for the Israelites for 40 years, He is providing for me each and every day. In light of this, how could I possibly contain my love for him? There is always something to praise Him for, for he is worthy to be praised.
While I can reflect on a circumstance in my life in which the suffering I endured was only temporary, I know that is not the experience we all have. Sometimes the pain you face may feel unending. Maybe it’s hard for you to sing songs of praise and thanksgiving when your heart is grieving and mourning. The beauty of worshipping a God who is both sovereign and unchanging is that while our circumstances may change, He never will.
Thanksgiving is defined as "the act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors, especially to God.” Even when life feels like it is falling apart, God has shown you favor by sending His son Jesus to die for you so that you can receive the benefits of His righteousness and be in a restored relationship with Him once again.
Let us remember Him and praise Him for He remembers our sins no more. We praise God, sing to Him, and offer him thanksgiving because of who He is and who He will always be. His word declares that HE is the “Rock of my salvation.” He is my fortress. He is my refuge. He is my true place of security. He is my deliverer. He is my Savior. He is my rescuer. He is my Creator. He is Lord over all, and He is worthy to be praised.
Prayer: God, thank you for redeeming me. Thank you for not forgetting me even though I am so quick to forget you. Thank you for the breath in my lungs that you provide me with each day. I pray that I will use it to bring honor and glory to your name. Thank you for being my Rock and for being my place of security and rest.
