“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
Anxiety is a problem. In fact, during the past months of the COVID pandemic, anxiety has been a very real battle for many. Who should I believe? If I get sick, do I face hospitalization? How should I protect my parents, my kids, my friends, my family? Should I get the “jab?” We live in a time with much anxiety.
In the simple words of our key verse above, the Bible gives us something constructive to do with anxiety, pray. In fact, the Bible invites us to pray about everything. What a wonderful invitation. Our Heavenly Father invites us to bring any of our needs, our concerns, our anxieties right to Him in prayer.
But notice something else about this biblical invitation. We are to pray with thanksgiving. That puts a different spin on our prayers. When we bring those anxieties to our Heavenly Father, we need to be thinking about gratitude. There is something about gratitude that changes my perspective on life. Gratitude moves me way from fear, anxiety and problems. It opens my eyes to see what God has done in my life. It moves me to notice blessings and strengthens my trust in God.
Yes, prayer with thanksgiving is a very real antidote to anxiety.
Question: Has anxiety been creeping up on me?
Challenge: The Thanksgiving holiday is coming soon. Get an early start on gratitude, it will do wonders.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I put my anxiety in Your hands and replace it with conscious gratitude. Thanks for all You are doing in my life.
