Blessed Appetite

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

This is the fourth of a series of statements Jesus made to open His famous Sermon on the Mount, found in Matthew 5-7. We refer to these statements as the Beatitudes. In them Jesus describes the secret of a blessed, happy life. In this beatitude, Jesus declares, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

We hunger and thirst for many things, and we can spend a lifetime seeking satisfaction, only to wind up empty and unfulfilled. This world is a dry and weary land, where there is no water! (Psalm 63:1, Jeremiah 2:13). Sin has infected everything, including you and me, and we experience the painful reality that there’s nothing in ourselves, or in this world that can truly satisfy!

In this beatitude, Jesus presents one longing that leads to true satisfaction: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” This longing for righteousness can only be satisfied by Him. On the cross He satisfied the righteous requirements of God for our sins, and as a result made it possible for us to have a right standing before God.

When we acknowledge our unrighteousness(sin) before Him, and long for the righteousness that only He can give, we come to the Savior who “justifies (declares righteous) the ungodly” (Romans 4:5). From that moment on, we’re clothed with His perfect righteousness, and enjoy a righteous standing before God! Not only that, He enters us by His Spirit, and instills in us an appetite to live righteously! As we seek to satisfy that new hunger and thirst, we find the true satisfaction that only He can give!

Jesus truly is the One… the only One who can “satisfy the longing soul, and fill the hungry soul with good things!” (Psalm 107:9).

Question: Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness?

Challenge: Come to the one who said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37). .

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the unsearchable riches of Christ!
