Not Just "You and Jesus"

“But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’” (1 Corinthians 12:18-21)

We live in a hyper individualized culture that tells us constantly to “be our own person” and “do our own thing.” But this individualistic mindset is a dangerous threat to our Christian walk. God has said that while we are individuals, we are also meant to be part of His body.

You can be a Christian without being in Christian community, because being a Christian means that you believe that you are saved by faith alone in Jesus alone. A hand is a hand, even if it's not connected to a body. But it’s not a healthy hand. Any part of the body that is severed from the body will atrophy and die.

And so it is with us. To thrive and remain spiritually alive, Christians need community with other Christians. We need to be with others to receive encouragement, share in prayer, confess our struggles, discuss life, bear one another burdens, and love each other.

Jesus is beautiful and amazing. Nothing will satisfy you like a thriving relationship with Him. Since Christian community is necessary to growing and enjoying your relationship with Him, then pursuing and prioritizing community should be of value to us.

Question: What does your schedule say about how much you value Christian community?

Challenge: Put Christian community on your schedule first, and don't commit to anything that conflicts with that priority.

Prayer: God, help us to value you so much that we value being in community with other Christians. Rescue us from our pride of self-sufficiency and from our idolatry of busyness. Help us to value community so that we might live the rich spiritual lives that You desire for us.
