“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.” (Matthew 5:13)

Salt was an essential part of the food industry in the ancient world. It was needed to make food more flavorful and prevent decay. However, not all salt was pure. Taken from the river bed, sometimes salt would have too much of the surrounding gravel mixed in with it, and then it would “lose” its saltiness. Salt was only effective when it was pure. It made a difference by being different.

God wants the same for us. God wants His people to make this world more flavorful, to fill the world with good things. He also wants us to work against the decay of sin. But how are we to do this? Not by being the same as the world, but by being different from the world. So, where there is hate, we love. Where there is resentment, we forgive. Where there is frustration, we are patient. Where there is darkness, we act in the light. Not because we are morally superior, but because we are filled with the Holy Spirit and love of Christ.

It can be so tempting to just want to blend in. We don't want to act differently than others. We don't want to stand out. We don't want to be thought weird or odd. So, we stay silent about Jesus. We even enter into doing things we know we shouldn't. Yet, this forfeits our purpose. God has left us in this world to make a difference. But we can only make a difference when we are being different.

So, in 2022, embrace the strange ways of God. Don't be scared to be different. We serve someone who died and rose again, that's pretty different. Pursue being the different kind of person that God calls us to be.

Question: How is God calling you to be different from those around you?

Challenge: Commit to one thing that you want to seek to be different in during the year 2022.

Prayer: God, forgive me for when I am fearful of standing out and help me to pursue being the salt that you want me to be. I want to make a difference for you.
