Satisfies Our Cravings

“The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” (John 4:15)

When I was younger, I was a very picky eater. My hamburgers had to be plain. My salads had to come without dressing. My cereal had to be dry (it still has to be dry because milk in cereal is gross!). When I was a teenager, I lived on a diet of Taco Bell and Mountain Dew. It is only by God’s grace that I am alive today.

My picky eating habits died after I married my wife. She loves food and is a very good cook. Also, she wasn’t going to put up with my picky eating for the rest of her life. She introduced me to new foods and I am so thankful that she opened up a whole new world for me and my palate.

A Samaritan woman had come to draw water from a well that she drew from on a regular basis. This day would be different because she would meet a man there who introduced her to living water. This woman was an outcast and seemed to have accepted her lot in life. She did try to fill the void in her life with men, but none of them could truly satisfy. She had a longing for something greater, so when Jesus offered living water, she jumped at the chance to get it. She was so overwhelmed by Jesus that she went back into her village and told everyone to come and see the one who told her everything she had ever done. She was no longer defined by her sin; rather, she was defined by Jesus.

We all have cravings, but those cravings are corrupted by our sin. We try to satisfy those cravings with the things of this world, but those things end up being a Taco Bell and Mountain Dew diet. When we finally taste and see that the Lord is good, we find what we have craved for all along. We find living water that will never run out and will fill us to overflowing.

Question: Has Jesus satisfied your cravings?

Challenge: Read the account of the Samaritan woman and Jesus in John 4:1-42.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are the one who satisfies our cravings.
