What Is Your Hope?

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” (Peter 1:3-4)

What is something that you are hoping for? What is the first thing you think about when you wake up? What is the last thing you contemplate as you go to sleep? We can have all kinds of different dreams that captivate our minds and burn in our hearts.

Dreams and hopes are a good thing. But there is only one hope that can eternally satisfy our souls. We might achieve all our dreams, some of our dreams, or none of our dreams. But every dream of this world will be over when we pass into the next. But there is a hope that goes beyond this world. It is the hope of knowing that we have a home in the next world where there is a glorious inheritance waiting for us. This inheritance is the beauty of living as God’s beloved child forever in heaven. No matter what we achieve in this life or don’t achieve, our inheritance in Christ is secured forever.

How can we really know this hope is true? We have never been to the next life. So how can we know that there is something beyond this world? Our hope is a living hope because it is founded upon Jesus, who is alive. He went to death and came back. His resurrection gives us proof that we, too, will be resurrected to new life in glory if we have faith in Him. Heaven is as real as Jesus’ tomb is empty. He is the greatest hope that we can have.

Question: Where are you placing your hope?

Challenge: Write down all the things you hope will happen and then write next to each thing, “Jesus is better.”

Prayer: God, help us to place our hope fully on you. We want to pursue the dreams you’ve given us here and be faithful to use all the talent you have blessed us with. But rescue us from placing our hope in the things of this world. Please give us the living hope of Christ.
