Holy, Almighty, Eternal

“Day and night they never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:8b)

Today's focal verse contains the words of the ongoing worship song of the four living creatures around the heavenly throne of God. Their song tells us three very important and powerful truths about God.

First, God is holy. This means God is absolutely pure, that he transcends his creation, meaning He is set apart from it. God’s holiness is so great it demands submission and worship. “Do not come any closer,’ God said to Moses. ``Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). Holiness embodies the presence of God. Holiness sets God apart.

Second, God is almighty. God asked Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). The question is rhetorical because he’s the almighty, nothing is too hard for him. My favorite illustration of this in scripture is in 2 Kings 6, where the powerful king of Aram is determined to kill Elisha. When Elisha’s assistant saw the king’s forces he cried out in despair, “What shall we do?’ ‘Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:15-17).

Lastly, God is eternal. He has no beginning and no end. He is the first and the last. He is the living one. He is self-existent. God is the source and the cause of everything else that exists. Psalm 90:2 says: “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Nothing came before him and nothing will be after him. He’s the great I Am who is ever present and always there.

Question: God is holy, almighty, and eternal. Do you trust Him with your life?

Challenge: Read Revelation 4.

Prayer: Lord, may we join the heavenly chorus and sing: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”
