Completely Clean

Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean…” (John 13:10)

These words were spoken by Jesus on the night before He was crucified, as He gathered with His disciples for what we refer to as the Last supper. We’re told in Luke’s gospel that the disciples were fussing with each other on this night over who among them was the greatest (Luke 22:24).

Jesus took this occasion to show them what true greatness looks like (See John 13:1-17). He rose from supper, laid aside His garments, girded Himself with a towel, poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet. As Jesus performed this humble act, He taught His disciples some profound spiritual truths.

When He got to Peter, Peter said, “Lord, are You washing my feet?" “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” This statement reminded them and us of our great need to have our sins washed away, and that Jesus is the only one who can do it. Peter responded, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus then answered Peter with these words: “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean…”

This is a glorious statement, describing the state of every person who has truly been born again. Our sins have been washed away, and we (like Peter), are completely clean! The apostle Paul puts it this way: “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11). John also speaks of this glorious truth in Revelation 1:5: “To Him (Jesus) who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.”

Question: Have you had your sins washed away?

Challenge: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Prayer: Lord, thank you for providing the means to have our sins washed away.
