Authentic Prayer

“Pray without ceasing.” “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Philippians 4:6)

One day Jesus had just finished praying and His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1). Jesus taught them gave them a sample prayer, we sometimes call it the Lord’s Prayer, but more accurately it should be called the Disciple’s Prayer. Prayer was important to Jesus, so it should be important to us. But what is prayer? Here is a simple definition of prayer I found: “talking to God.”

Prayer is not meditation or passive reflection; it is a direct address to God. Prayer is the communication of the human soul with the Lord who created the soul. “Prayer is the primary way for the believer in Jesus Christ to communicate his emotions and desires with God and to fellowship with God” (Gotquestion.org).

As a Christ follower we have the privilege to talk with God, the Creator of the Universe, anytime we want. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 suggests we should constantly be talking to God. One translation of that verse says, “be unceasing and persistent in prayer.”

We can and should bring anything and everything to the Lord. If He is our Savior, He says we are His friend (John 15:13-16). Friends spend time talking and sharing with each other; that is what we need to do with Jesus. “In everything, every circumstance and situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your specific requests known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Talk to Jesus and let Him know what is going on in your life, just like you do when you talk with a friend. That is what it means to “be unceasing and persistent in prayer.”

And he walks with me and he talks with me
And he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known
                                                           (T. Whitson)

Question: Do you spend time walking and talking with Jesus each day?

Challenge: Spend some time today and meditate on Matthew 6:9-13, The Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer: Thank you Jesus that we can talk to you as our Lord, our Savior, and our Friend. Help us to pray without ceasing.
