Know Your Enemy

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:11-12)

Satan is referred to in scripture as both a serpent and a lion, indicating his two primary strategies of attack. When he comes as a lion it’s in full frontal attack with the intent to destroy us and our faith in God. Peter says it clearly: “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Satan hates us because he hates God. The more closely we follow God the more aggressive will be Satan’s attacks. Revelation 12:10 says that he “accuses us before our God day and night.” He attacks us to diminish and destroy our faith. That was his plan when he accused Job, arguing that if Job suffered loss and difficulty, he would curse God to His face. Satan tries to defeat God by defeating us.

The Bible also warns us that Satan “masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). He does this to deceive us, taking the same cunning “I’m on your side” approach he took when he came in the form of a serpent to Adam and Eve. He claims that God doesn’t really have our best interests at heart, and he’s there to help us out. Sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

What are we to do against such a fierce and determined adversary? James 4:7 says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Our main weapon of resistance is the word of God. That’s how Jesus rebuffed Satan’s temptation. With the word as your sword, “put on the full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:14-17). And pray. “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (Ephesians 6:10), and you will be victorious over Satan.

Question: Are you standing firm in the Lord and his mighty power?

Challenge: “Do not give the devil a foothold” by the way you live (Ephesians 4:27).

Prayer: Lord, help us to know our enemy and equip us to stand against his schemes.
