Sin Crouching at the Door

“The Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door, it desires to have you, but you must master it.” (Genesis 4:6-7)

The story of Genesis 4 is not pretty. Brothers Able and Cain brought offerings to God. Knowing their hearts, the Lord accepted Able’s offering, but not Cain’s. This made Cain angry and depressed. God came to Cain and warned him about this danger, but  Cain ignored God's warning and let sin master him. He lured his brother to a field and murdered him out of rage and bitterness.

What an apt description of the moment we too face temptation. Sin is crouching at our door, it wants to take us. If we handle temptation well, God will accept us (and give us power to resist sin). However, if we open the door and let sin into our lives, it will take us. The moment to master sin is before we open the door.

In Cain’s case, he needed to accept God's discipline about his sacrifice and ask God to teach him to have a heart of faith. There is no shame (or sin) in learning how to walk by faith. Able seemed to understand how to do that and Cain needed to learn. God was ready to teach Cain valuable lessons about faith.

Like Cain we too face dangerous emotions, embarrassment, temptations, and hard lessons. We too can let our emotions overpower us and in the end, open the door to sin. But, we can also learn to master sin. Recognize it. Expose it. Choose against it. Once we do that, the sin crouching at our door loses its power, shows its true colors and we see that God will help us master it. There is great joy when we see temptation and say no!  When we refuse to open the door.

Question: Is there sin crouching at your door?

Challenge: Lord, thanks for warning me of the danger of sin. Now help me master it.

Prayer: Lord, thanks for warning me of the danger of sin. Now help me master it.
