Good Works

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Two very familiar verses in the Bible are Ephesians 2:8-9 which declare, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” These wonderful verses remind us that our great salvation is a gift, given by the grace (unmerited favor) of God, and obtained through faith(in Christ), not by works. Some have stated it this way: “We’re saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.”

That being said, God has called His people to a life of good works. As today’s Bible verse declares, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…” We, as Christians should be known by our good works. We’re instructed in Titus 2:14 to “be zealous for good works.” Paul writes these words in Titus 3:8, “This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.” Someone has called good works “the handmaiden of the Gospel.”

In other words, doing good works often opens the door for the Gospel. When people see the love of Christ in action through His followers, credence is given to the message we bear. The lost are more likely to hear what Christians have to say when they see lives of faith lived out in loving works and deeds. A beautiful example of this is Tabitha, who is described in Acts 9:36 as a woman “full of good works and charitable deeds…”

May these words describe us!

Question: Would people describe you as “full of good works and charitable deeds?”

Challenge: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Prayer: Lord, help us to a people “zealous for good works”!
